The new coat of arms depicts a wheat garland surrounding two flags and a mosque, below which is the date SH1348/1929. In January 1929, King Amanullah Khan was forced to abdicate by rebel forces led by Habibullah Kalakani. In November 1929, Kalakani was defeated and executed by Prince Mohammed Nadir Khan, who ruled as king until his assassination in 1933. He was succeeded by his son, Mohammad Zahir Shah.
